That makes sense I guess, especially as the choices cascade through the three games (so far) - if they all led somewhere interesting the complications would be horrendous!
Tragedy can seem like the most appropriate ending sometimes. There are some characters for whom 'retire quietly to the country to live happily ever after' is just not going to work. And relationships that arise in the desperate heat of trying to save the world, but have nowhere to go after that.
