My phone contract is close to expiring. I have been with 3 and fairly happy with them, but they merged with Vodaphone a couple of years ago and it is gradually becoming a Victorian style marriage (as in, 3 and Vodaphone are one company and that company is Vodaphone). I am only being offered roll-overs/upgrades to Vodaphone.

Now Andy is with Vodaphone, and he has been rather unimpressed with them (although they have been improving lately), and of course they have been in the news recently for some not very good reasons. They're also not really stocking the Sony-Ericsson phones that I like. I'm not necessarily considering updating my phone right now, because I've only had my current one for about a year and it seems rather wasteful to just get rid of it (although the lure of the smartphon is hard to resist). But the option to upgrade to something a bit funkier in a year or two would be nice.

On the other hand, being with the same provider as the person who I call or text most has got to have some benefits (not that I usually have trouble keeping under my cap)

Would anyone like to wax lyrical about their mobile provider, or even their phone?

Vodafone are evil. I won't be renewing my contract with them when it runs out next year. I didn't know they'd bought out 3, though, so I'll be avoiding them too. I've heard good things about Virgin and Optus.

I have to say, I have always been with telstra but mostly because its the only provider that gives really good coverage up here in Queensland anywhere outside of the city. Not that I go outside of the city that much but if I want to go visit the folks Telstra gives me coverage for the drive and at their house. Richard has been with 3 and vodaphone and frequently doesn't have a signal when I do.

Is Telstra expensive though? I've heard it's expensive (though maybe I could get cheap calls to you and Dad, that might be a bonus)?

I have a $49 cap, for which I have quite a few included calls ($200 I think). However, I am on an older plan and I don't know if they do deals like that any more. However, it is my only phone. I know you can get loads better deals with telstra if you bundle your home phone, mobile and internet
