I haven’t posted for ages, I know. I started writing a long catch up post a few weeks ago and literally in the middle of writing I came down with a horrible lurgy that kept me off work and not particularly feeling like sitting in front of a computer for a whole week. Andy had the same thing at the same time, which always sucks. Anyway, the lovely weather last weekend and a few people posting garden pics on G+ inspired me to get out and take some pictures of my springtime garden.

Not much to say besides that. I am mostly over the lurgy now. Work is much much less stressful than it was in the first half of the year. The ankle is still giving me grief, which is annoying. Andy had a lovely Father’s Day. I appear to have given up on EOS and gone back to playing Skyrim. The rest of this month is looking pretty quiet, but October is promising to be busier (Week off for school holidays, week in Canberra for a management course, and trying to get to an event (or maybe even two)).

Enough said! On with the springtime delights!

This is the baby nectarine tree we recently acquired. The plan is to try and grow it in a large pot. At the moment it is a mass of lovely pink blossom:

Blueberries! Or proto-blueberries anyway:

I pruned the roses rather dramatically over winter (which is a thing you do with roses), and they have just started to flower again.

Next up – the mystery tree. Our whole street is lined with these trees, which are currently covered in white blossom. It is very attractive (although the high winds recently mean the road is looking like several weddings have been through). We only have a tiddly one on our front lawn – planted later for some reason. I don’t know what this tree is. When we moved in it had small spherical fruit with a hard, apple-like texture, but none of the internal structure you expect with apples. I thought perhaps crabapples or medlar, but neither seem to quite fit. Suggestions welcome.

Pink poppies, yellow poppies…I planted these in two stages – these ones were planted earlier in the year and have been flowering rather splendidly for a while now. The next lot are just started to put up flower heads. I am curious as to what colours they will be.

I can’t remember what this one is – I thought strawflower, but I think that is not right. I actually planted four of these but the rotten snails got three of them. Shame as the flowers are rather lovely.

The green tufty thing just above it is a cornflower, which hasn’t flowered yet.

And finally heartsease, also known as love-in-idleness, or johnny-jump-up. The latter is a more recent American name, but the first two names were mentioned by Shakespeare, and he would also have known these flowers as ‘pansies’ as they are the ancestor of modern pansy cultivars. I also planted these earlier in the year, and they have done very well. They are very cheery little flowers.
