So…many…grapes…..

So yesterday I noticed that the grapes were being eaten by the birds, which means it is time to pick them (actually it means they are not quite ripe enough for people, but just ripe for birds, but since we aren’t going to eat them I figure it doesn’t matter too much). And I will point out that is a 12l bucket in the photo. What am I going to do with them all? Good question. I am going to juice them. Whether they end up as grape juice or verjuice depends on how they come out in the end, as they are none extremely sweet and some still fairly unripe. Still I think I will be very busy the next few days picking and washing and pressing and…..would anyone like some grape juice?

grapes!

Also I should have kept my mouth shut about sleeping on Wednesday. We had another horror night with the boy, and then 1.5 hrs howling before he went to sleep on Thursday night. I thought we were done with all this. *sigh*

Today Andy and I went to see Avatar. I’m not too bothered about going to the movies these days for many reasons (I find two hours doing nothing but sitting in the dark somewhat of a waste of my time, it’s so dear, DVDs are so good, and I’ve always found so much nervous activity without any physical activity to be rather discombobulating), but I think I’m glad I saw it at the cinema. We did see it in 3D (Andy has also seen it in 2D and he said it didn’t add much). 3D is a lot better than it was the last time I saw a 3D film, which is probably about 15yrs ago, and Avatar used it a lot more subtly than the 3D ads which preceded it, but I think it’s still lacking something. It’s so obviously layers of 2D, it’s a bit like watching a moving pop-up book. I don’t think we’ll be buying a 3D television anytime soon.

As for the film itself, I did like it. It looked really fabulous, although there were a few things that niggled a bit. The Poet in my head thinks it would be quite marvellous to be a Na’vi, but then the Yorkshirewoman elbows her way forward saying ‘yes but only until you need the loo’….

Maybe the Na'vi don't go to the loo. Maybe it's all just gas exchange or something. Who knows if they even eat? Maybe they use all that blue pigment to photosynthesize. Or since they have bioluminescence maybe they are in fact like Omphalotus nidiformis and are a fungus! Could be anything.

Speaking of Omphalotus nidiformis, or glow-in-dark mushrooms, how can I have lived in southern Australia for 20 years and never have heard of it? Apparently it occurs in SA! Where, I ask you, where? I want to see a glow in the dark mushroom! Next time you are wandering in a forest at night you should look for some!

Well, one assumes they eat, because they kill animals.

I don't get to a lot of wandering around forests at night these days, but even when I did I can't say I noticed any glowing mushrooms.

Maybe they need to make clothes out of animals but don't actually eat them? Probably unlikely.

No, I feel cheated at the lack of glowing mushrooms in my life! Nevermind.

Maybe they have some in NZ? They have glow worms in Te Anau I know - not quite the same thing.

Nah, apparently these are native to Southern Australia (Tas, Vic, south eastern corner of SA + Adelaide, NSW and small parts of Perth and the sourthern forests of WA).

They have glow worms here in the botanic gardens which is about 500m from where I am now. However, I have yet to see them also as the glow work tours keep getting cancelled due to rain.
