Me me mememe...
Jul. 11th, 2015 08:15 pmA meme from
irreparable: 31 things about me.
1. I had lived in three different countries and visited several others by the time I was 16.
2. Since 1989 I have lived in Adelaide in South Australia, apart from five years in Canberra.
3. I have three children. I was in labour with the first for 22 hours, with the second for 6 hours, and with the third for 70 mins. One of the reasons I don't have four children is that, extrapolating from this data, I don't expect I would actually go into labour, just explode.
4. By way of formal qualifications I have an honours degree in theoretical physics and a certificate in food handling safety.
5. I have a rotten head cold just now.
6. The rotten head cold is not helping me think of 31 things.
6.5 (because the last one was kind of cheating). I once sprained my ankle hiking in the Flinders Ranges and had to walk on it for two days to get out. Fun times.
7. Also on the health front: I may have once forestalled a bout of tonsillitis by inducing an allergic reaction. Highly speculative and not at all recommended.
8. I am currently allergic to: several pollens, dust, sulphites (a group of chemicals mostly used as preservatives in wine and dried fruit) and at least one variety of grass. Oh, and parts of my own body (mainly the thyroid gland).
9. I am ambidextrous, although when I was a child I assumed that I was right handed like most other people, so most of my fine motor skill development happened on the right. However, I later realised that I don't have a dominant hand or eye and a lot of the skills I have learned as an adult I can do equally well (or badly) with either hand.
10. I am great at envisioning and starting projects, but not at finishing them off. If you are familiar with the Belbin Team Roles classification, I am very much a Plant and not so much a Completer-Finisher. The most obvious side effect of this is the dozen or so half finished crochrt projects stashed around the house.
11. In Myers-Briggs terms I am an INTJ, also known as the Mastermind. In the Simpsons Myers-Briggs INTJ is represented by Mr Burns. I wouldn't say I was an evil genius, but if you know of any real estate available in dormant volcanoes, I'm in the market. Just saying.
12. Are we there yet?
13. I often wonder who does the washing up at Rivendell. For a long time I had a theory that it was Arwen, and this was why she was so keen to marry Aragorn. Better a short life as a mortal queen than an eternity of dishpan hands. However, I have recently developed a new theory, which is mine. The theory is this: no one does the dishes at Rivendell. Tolkien's immortal Elves, being immune to disease, are not particularly bothered by the prospect of salmonella, and therefore don't feel the need to clean their plates. This may, in fact, tie into the old myth about never eating or drinking in Faerie lands. The threat is not so much being trapped for a hundred years as it is botulism.
14. Most foodies will eat just about anything, but I am a picky foodie. Most of the stuff I don't like can be categorised as fruit, but my other major bug bear is mushrooms.
15. Mushrooms are the vile and slimy emissions of Satan, and the only mushrooms I will consider are the tempura button mushrooms at Yakutori Takumi on Melbourne St.
16. Andy and I would eat a lot more Japanese food, except I don't like mushrooms and he doesn't like seafood, and that's about 90% of it.
17. I am not very fond of going to the cinema. I don't mind movies, but I would rather watch them at home where I can be doing something else, like crochet, at the same time. I usually, therefore, don't see popular movies until they come out on DVD and am constantly avoiding spoilers online.
18. Some things I have read recently and really liked: The Goblin Emperor, Ancillary Justice and Ancillary Sword (looking forward to the final one, coming out soon), UprootedThe Martian and Among Others.
19. I probably have about 10kg of yarn in my yarn stash. My fabric stash has 30m of woollen fabric and 50m of silk plus more of linen and cotton. I don't buy much fabric these days, but I still buy yarn fairly regularly.
20. Woot. Two thirds of the way through.
21. My favourite chef is Maestro Martino da Como, who was chief cook to a succession of Italian cardinals in the 15th century. He wrote a book called Libro de Arte de Coquinaria.
22. My favourite foods beside chocolate are legumes. I adore chickpeas, lentils, beans, peas, the lot. And things made from them, like falafel.
23. I don't like hot weather at all. I would be happy if it never got above 28C. Cold weather doesn't bother me much at all, but I am not greatly fond of cold and damp weather, especially as I get older.
24. My favourite painters are Monet and Waterhouse.
25. I drink a lot of tea. Between 1 and 1.5 litres a day most days. Mostly I drink black tea - I like Earl Grey, chai and orange pekoe - but I like green tea too.
26. I am a big fan of the Bethesda Elder Scrolls series of games. I play Elder Scrolls Online, and I still sink rather a lot of time into Skyrim.
27. My favourite colour is purple. Blue and green rate highly too, especially greenish and purplish blues.
28. I used to hold pins in my mouth when sewing, but I recently read about a theatre costumer who accidentally aspirated a pin she was holding in her mouth, and ended up having a quarter of her lung removed. I think I will cease this practice.
29. I recently decided not to vote in the Adelaide City Library best books poll, because I couldn't decide on which book I actually like best.
30. Besides my spouse and kids, my immediate family all live in Queensland, and my extended family is all in the UK.
31. Hurray, done. And now I am going to crochet another square or two in the blanket I am making and watch the Mummy II.
