Hurray for callusses

I accidentally sliced my finger with a kitchen knife on Sunday, giving myself what could have been a rather nasty cut, except that I hit my needle callus, and just sliced a large chunk of dead skin instead. It completely failed to bleed, but now I have an irritating flap of dead skin on my finger that is snagging on everything. I'm not sure whether to be grateful or relieved at this revelation of how much of my forefinger is dead.

And what is it with hot weather in October? I think that is cheating...although funnily enough my herb garden seems to be enjoying it.
